So it has been two months since I've seen BNL and I was needing a fix. It had been a
long, hot, boring summer on the concert scene (you will notice in music
reviews that I didn't go to any concerts the entire month of July). A carefully
planned and overdue work trip was pulled together and I was off to Seattle, a city that I
had never before visited. It was a lovely place, the weather was perfect, and BNL was
playing at the somewhat famous Moore Theater, where Pearl Jam shot their
"Evenflow" video. In the spirit of sharing BNL, I invited several people from
the reseller that I was visiting and one other coworker. None of these guys had really
heard much about BNL, except for my rantings, so they didn't know what to expect. After
the show there were adjectives like "awesome", "great",
"hysterical", "unusual", used to describe the show, and I feel like
I've done my part in creating 4 new BNL fans.
Anyway, the show: BNL had two opening acts. First out was Tara MacLean who was very
good. She had a Jewel like feel about her as she played several folksy ballads on an
acoustic and was occasionally accompanied by another guitarist. Of note are her songs,
"Seven Stones of Jordan" and the final song she performed a cappella which I
believe was "Silence", the name of her CD.
Next up was Dog's Eye View, a group that, to me, was unimpressive. They played a number
of songs, showed little enthusiasm, and seemed angry when all the crowd wanted to hear was
their hit, "Everything Falls Apart".
Moving on to bigger and better things, BNL hit the stage and did their close in
acoustic set, now adding a personal favorite, "Blame It On Me", which had Kevin
on guitar adding a nice groovy feel. Other highlights of the show included banter about
how crappy their hotel was. It seems that when they went to check in to the Camblin, they
were told that they were in the "cabana" section, which was really the name for
the crappy section of the hotel. They proceeded to compare it to Dante's Inferno and talk
about problems with noise and air conditioners. They also had a bit of banter on X games
and discussed how since no one really has experience in these sports, it's hard to get
good commentators. Tyler cracked me up when he added "like John Tesh at the
Olympics." They proceeded into a bit about commentators contradicting one another
("that's one of the more difficult moves" "no, it's actually one of the
easiest" "well, I created that move") and then went into a whole segment on
the X Games Tree Building Event with contestants planting seeds and then screaming
"GROWWWW! at the ground. Later there was also a section on famous Corey's with Steve
breaking into "Never Surrender" and a rap on Seattle complete with skateboarders
and flying fish. Another funny point was when Kevin said he had seen a "really big
shoe" that day, but didn't elaborate.
As always, a very funny, excellent show. The crowd was a sellout. It was nice to see
their popularity on the other coast. Next stop for me, Labor Day weekend with shows in
Cleveland and Minneapolis.
On That Note, I'm outta here......
